Institute of Eco-environmental and Soil Sciences, Guangdong Academy of Sciences (GIESS), founded in 1958 and formerly named as Guangdong Institute of Eco-environmental and Soil Sciences, is under the administration of Guangdong Academy of Sciences. It is a leading research institution of China in the fields of pedology and edaphology focusing on the sciences of red soils and technology development for ecological and environmental protection. The mission of GIESS is to study core research questions of soil sciences, with global perspective and regional focus, targeting fundamental research and technology development in the broad areas of studies on the constraint of soil resources and environmental issues upon sustainability of social-economic developments, on soil erosion, soil conservation and sustainability of soil ecosystems, on nutrient cycling in red soil and its environmental impact, and on biogeochemical cycling of heavy metals and soil pollution control. Today, GIESS has 246 existing employees and 208 scientific researchers, of which 6 talents are at the national level, including 2 talents of the National Outstanding Youth Fund and 4 of the Excellent Youth Fund. 24 provincial and ministerial level talents, including 3 members in the 100-person program of CAS and 2 members of Ding Ying Science and Technology Award, 6 members of Guangdong Outstanding Youth Fund and 11 persons of Guangdong Special Support Program (including 1 recipient of the 100 talents program of south Guangdong). Among the research staff, 18 members are on the special governmental allowance program, 23 have senior professional titles (full professor level equivalent), 37 have mid-level professional titles (associate professor equivalent), 91 members hold Ph.D. degrees and 70 have earned master of science degrees. Among its senior staff, 6 members are PhD graduate supervisors and 22 additional M.S. supervisors. GIESS has established South China Soil Deficiency Control land Rehabilitation National Joint Local Engineering Research Center, Farmland Soil Deficiency Control and Rehabilitation Technological Country Home Engineering Laboratory (Co-construction Unit), Soil Science Museum of Guangdong Province, Soil Pollution Rehabilitation and Equipment Engineering Center of Guangdong Province, Key Laboratory of Comprehensive Management of Agricultural Environment of Guangdong Province, Public Laboratory of Environmental Science and Technology of Guangdong Province, Non-point Source Pollution Prevention and Control Engineering Center of Guangdong Province, Soil Germplasm Resource Bank of Guangdong Province, Innovations in Shaoguan Farmland Heavy Metal Pollution Control and Rehabilitation Location Test Station Platform. It is the sponsor for The Guangdong Society of Soil Science and The Chinese Society of Environmental Resources and Ecological Conservation. It is also the executive agency of The World Association of Soil and Water Conservation (WASWC), and oversees the administrative office of Ecology and Environmental Sciences, one of the core research journals in the field of natural sciences in China.
